Good Intercom, cloud platform needs work

I ordered the Recessed Mount Video Intercom for our apartment building, along with a Door Controller and the PoE Kit. The ordering process itself was fairly straightforward, done through a sales rep, not directly on a website. Delivery took about 8 business days to arrive in Boston, which was within the timeframe they quoted. Installation was handled by our contractor, but the ButterflyMX support team was responsive when he had a few technical questions about integrating it with our existing electric strike. The intercom unit itself feels very sturdy and the video quality is clear. The mobile app works well for tenants to grant access. My main critique is the cloud management dashboard; it's functional but a bit clunky, especially when trying to pull specific access logs. It feels like it could be more intuitive and customizable for property managers. Overall, a solid product, but the software side has room for refinement.

Good system, easy access

We installed a ButterflyMX Smart Intercom. Delivery was quick. Installation was smooth. Residents use the app easily. It's a reliable system. No issues so far.

Works as expected, pretty solid

We put in the Surface Mount Video Intercom at our main entrance. It was pretty easy to get set up once the installer was here. Residents like being able to use their phones to open the door, and I can see who's coming and going. Had one question about changing some settings in the dashboard, but a quick call to support cleared it up. No big drama, it just works. Happy with it.

Reliable system, second time using

This is our second property where we've installed a ButterflyMX system. This time we went with the 12-inch Video Intercom and some Wiegand Readers for interior doors. Just like our previous experience, the hardware arrived on schedule, and the setup process was straightforward for our team. We've found the platform to be consistently reliable across both locations. The cloud management dashboard has seen some minor improvements since our last installation a couple of years ago, making it a bit more user-friendly. Their support team has always been helpful when we've needed them. It's why we keep coming back.

Easy to use for residents

We got the 8-inch Video Intercom for our small office building. It's been great for our team to let people in, especially after hours. The mobile app is really user-friendly and I had no issues setting it up. I did have a small hiccup initially connecting to our Wi-Fi, but their customer service walked me through it quickly. The only minor point is that the system requires a pretty stable internet connection for optimal performance, which isn't always perfect in our older building. Value-wise, it feels like a good investment for the security and convenience it offers.

Anyone know if these ButterflyMX systems play nice with existing door locks? We just put in new electric strikes and don't want to replace them already.

B Brian Anderson 3 weeks ago
Yeah, they usually do. It's one of their selling points.

Pretty sure they're designed to integrate with a lot of existing hardware. You'd probably want to double check with their support just to be 100% on your specific model, but generally, yes.

Does ButterflyMX work if the internet goes down? Or are we totally out of luck for entry?

B Brandon King 5 days ago
It's cloud based, so if the internet dies, it's gonna be an issue for the smart features. There's usually a backup way to get in though, like a physical key or a local access method.

I think local access still works for some things, like resident entry, but anything cloud-dependent (like visitor calls) won't. They usually have some info on their site about fallback options.

Thinking about getting the 8-inch intercom. Is it overkill for a smaller apartment building, or does the size actually matter for usability?

H Hannah J. 2 weeks ago
Depends on how many people will use it and how visible you want it to be. The larger ones are easier to see and use for sure.

For my place, we went with the 12-inch cause it's a busy entrance. The 8-inch might be fine for a smaller spot, but consider if older residents or people with vision issues will be using it a lot. Bigger screen helps.

Hey, looking into these intercoms for our new building. Any idea how long it usually takes to get the hardware after ordering? Trying to plan out our timeline.

Z Zach Parker 2 weeks ago
From what I remember, mine came pretty quick, maybe a week or so? It wasn't ages, that's for sure.

Yeah, I think it depends on what you order and where you are, but for standard stuff, a few business days to a week seems about right. They're usually pretty good about getting it out.

Any non-profits here get a discount from ButterflyMX? Wondering if it's worth asking or if those kinds of deals are rare.

B Brittany Roberts 5 days ago
Yeah, they definitely offer non-profit discounts. It's not advertised widely, but if you contact them, they'll usually work with you.

S Susan Martin 3 days ago
We got one for our community center. Just tell them you're a non-profit and they'll factor it into your quote. Worth the ask!

I'm in Austin, TX. How fast can I realistically expect installation to happen once I get the hardware? Trying to coordinate with contractors.

B Brian 2 weeks ago
Installation time varies a lot based on your building's setup. A few hours for a basic replacement, maybe a day or two for a more complex install.

S Sean H. 2 weeks ago
For my building in Dallas, it was about a day and a half, but we had some old wiring to deal with. Austin might have local installers that are faster, but I'd budget for at least a full day.

Is there a trick to getting a discount on these systems? I see some mentions of 'referral credit' or 'volume discount' but nothing obvious on the site.

P Patricia Robinson 1 month ago
You usually have to talk to their sales team directly. They don't really do promo codes like a normal online store. It's more about getting a quote.

My building got a discount because we were doing a bunch of units. I'd just reach out to them and ask if you qualify for anything, especially if you're looking at multiple properties or something big.
